Iodine is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in hormone balance. A lack of iodine in the body can lead to an under active thyroid gland which directly affects the production of thyroid hormones. Not only does this affect overall health, but it also directly affects the skin.
The thyroid hormones play an important role in many of the body’s processes including the control of skin regeneration. (1) When iodine levels are low, the thyroid gland cannot produce adequate amounts of thyroid hormone and so the regeneration of skin is significantly slowed. This can result in delayed wound healing and cause dry and flaky skin.
An under active thyroid gland also causes the body’s metabolism to slow down. A slow metabolism often results in a reduction of the body’s natural moisturizer – sweat. (2)
